Brussels | Belgium

Po Amsterdamie była Bruksela. Piękne miasto, chociaż zachywciło mnie dopiero po chwili, nie od pierwszego wejrzenia. 

Na Grand Place myślałam o starej, bogatej Europie, tej, która kiedyś "poszła na wojnę i już z niej nie wróciła", jak ciekawie ujął to autor jakiegoś artykułu o I wojnie światowej. Na Place Royale wróciły wiedeńskie wspomnienia. Zachwycił kościół Église Notre-Dame du Sablon. A także nasze piękne, ciekawe mieszkanie, w którym zamieszkaliśmy na tych kilka dni.

Błądząc uliczkami Brukseli nie mogłam nie myśleć o jądrze ciemności, bo to przecież tutaj Joseph Conrad - a później i jego Marlow - załatwiał wyjazd do belgijskiego Konga. Myślałam też o Elisabeth Elliot (née Howard) oraz Audrey Hepburn, które w tym właśnie mieście przyszły na świat.

Polubiłam Brukselę. Już cieszę się na wrześniowy powrót.

English After Amsterdam there was Brussels. A beautiful city, although it charmed me after a while, not at the first sight.

While at Grand Place, I was thinking about the old wealthy Europe which once 'went to the war and never came back', as one journalist interestingly put it in an article about the Great War. At Place Royale there were memories from Vienna that came back to me. I liked imposing Église Notre-Dame du Sablon. And I liked our beautiful apartment we were staying in for those few days too.

As I was wandering the streets of Brussels I could not help thinking about heart of darkness, because it was here where Joseph Conrad - and later his Marlow as well - had his journey to Congo settled. I was thinking about Elisabeth Elliot (née Howard) and Audrey Hepburn too, as they both were born in the city.

I liked Brussels. I'm looking forward to visiting it again in September.
