Brussels again

Coraz bardziej lubię to miasto.

English My November trip to Brussels was one of those trips when everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. Fortunately this time it was much better.
I like this city more and more. Perhaps because a city in which you've already got your favourite places for lunch, and even sometimes you can tell other fellow tourist the way to the Palace de Justice, is not entirely strange to you.

Bruges | Belgium

Prawie, bo musiałam jeszcze dotrzeć do miejsca zakwaterowania.

English I got off the train onto an empty platform of an unfamiliar railway station. It was already dark. Only an illuminated board with the town's name made sure to me that I'd arrived in my destination. Almost, I just needed to get to my accommodation. Continuing toward the exit I realised that there I was in a new town in a foreign country which two languages I neither spoke nor understood; and on top of that I didn't really know where my accommodation was and how I could get there. And it was already dark. The most curious thing, though, was that I was neither afraid nor anxious. What should I be afraid of? Only that the Internet connection might drop off and then it'd be harder (and take much longer) to find the way.

There are many things I'm afraid of, sometimes quite irrational, or, such that others would smile tolerantly at (more polite option) or laugh them down (less polite). But it seems that getting off a train at unfamiliar railway stations in foreign cities and countries doesn't belong to that category.

And Bruges proved to be as beautiful as they say.

Brussels | Belgium

English After Amsterdam there was Brussels. A beautiful city, although it charmed me after a while, not at the first sight.
While at Grand Place, I was thinking about the old wealthy Europe which once 'went to the war and never came back', as one journalist interestingly put it in an article about the Great War. At Place Royale there were memories from Vienna that came back to me. I liked imposing Église Notre-Dame du Sablon. And I liked our beautiful apartment we were staying in for those few days too.
As I was wandering the streets of Brussels I could not help thinking about heart of darkness, because it was here where Joseph Conrad - and later his Marlow as well - had his journey to Congo settled. I was thinking about Elisabeth Elliot (née Howard) and Audrey Hepburn too, as they both were born in the city.
I liked Brussels. I'm looking forward to visiting it again in September.
